The Martins of the
East Nashville School of Music

Danny Ray was living in the Tanglewood Historic District in Inglewood when we met. I hadn’t spent much time in East Nashville, but having lived in Midtown in Memphis during graduate school, I was delighted to find a community with a similar vibe on this side of the river. Of course, Danny Ray had lived in Boston in his Berklee days and was happy anywhere he could find neighborhood eateries and a variety of live music performances.

To us, East Nashville is a real neighborhood—a community rich with history, diversity, individuality and potential. The people who live here love this little piece of Nashville. We're devoted to maintaining its beautiful architecture, greenways and community spaces while creating new eateries, new businesses and new opportunities—all strikingly individual in character. And that's really the point—character. East Nashville has its rough edges and its perhaps checkered reputation (for some), but every bit of it lives right next door to historical masterpieces of homes, neighborhood-friendly bike paths and greenways and some of the hippest, most upscale dining and eating experiences imaginable. And it feels like there's music, musicians and music lovers on every corner. We love it!

East Nashville is almost human in its identity—far from perfect, definitely multi-layered, really trying and growing better all the time.

It’s here we’ve found neighbors who’ve become friends, and a church that’s become home. It’s here we want to raise a family and walk our dogs (maybe even our cats). It’s here that we want to realize our dreams and be a part of building a community full of flavor and individuality.

Of course, we love music, too—me as just an ordinary fan who sings in the shower and the car, Danny Ray as gifted musician who hears complicated scores in his head and produces those works on guitar. What other medium besides music touches every single person on the planet in such a universal yet profoundly personal way?

Throw teaching backgrounds into the mix with our passion for music and for East Nashville, and we present the East Nashville School of Music. We hope every one of our neighbors—from birth to retirement—finds something to enjoy and to learn in the variety of lessons, classes and performances we, along with our incredible instructors and students, will introduce over the next few months and years. We hope we give back as you have given to us and that together we find the success to be around for a long, long time!
